Creating Better Futures Together – Community Engaged Learning

In the dynamic and ever-evolving business landscape, one principle remains constant: the future of our organizations depends on the education and involvement of our youth. As we forge strong partnerships with local higher education institutions, our aim is to provide students with real-world experiences and contribute to their future success.

The Future Starts with Collaboration

In the spring of 2023, Mid-City Steel, had the extraordinary opportunity to collaborate with the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse (UWL) through the Accounting Community Engaged Learning project. This partnership, facilitated by the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce, aimed to offer students invaluable experiences beyond the classroom. Students from UWL worked closely with our organization, providing financial guidance, strategic insight and fiscal analysis and on key issues

Beyond the Typical Education

This incredible collaboration brought significant benefits to both our organization and the students involved. By immersing themselves in our operations, our brand and strategic objectives, the students gained a deeper understanding of our company. This allowed the “students to familiarize themselves with the company so they would be better prepared to offer insight and analysis on key issues” per the UWL article. This allowed the “students to familiarize themselves with the company so they would be better prepared to offer insight and analysis on key issues” per the UWL article. They were able to provide insightful analysis and recommendations on various matters, allowing us to approach strategic decisions from new perspectives and allowing them to expand their knowledge to further complexities that often arise in a real world setting.

Stories from the Real World

During the project, our President, Paul Bagniefski, had the opportunity to share his personal journey in the accounting industry with the students. As a UWL graduate himself, he emphasized the importance of accounting in his own success. Paul commended the students on their performance by saying “the students’ dedication and commitment to their project are a testament to their hard work and passion for their for their field of study. We are proud of their accomplishments and the level of professionalism they displayed throughout their visit. Their ability to capture and analyze the intricacies of our shop, showcases their understanding of the subject matter which was obvious by their final reports,” Their results and recommendations impressed our organization to the extent that we plan to implement many of their suggestions in the future.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

This story would not be complete without a list of thank you’s from our organization. We would like to extend a special thank you to the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce for facilitating this partnership between our organization and the the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.
